The Fine Tuning Argument

The Fine-Tuned Universe: a message from God, written in the fabric of our world

We all agree that the universe is built upon fundamental and consistent laws. But when we look deeper, we find the nature of these laws have two parts: an action and a magnitude.

What do I mean by action and magnitude? Action is what a universal law does, and magnitude is a numerical value for how much it does it

For example, gravity’s action is to pull mass together, and it does so at a magnitude of G (6.7x10^-11). If either it’s action or magnitude were different, it would have dire consequences on if life could exist at all

The universe is filled with these extremely specific actions and magnitudes that “conveniently” allow life to exist. To go through just a few examples, take for instance

D (the spatial dimension constant). Its action is to give direction, and it does so at a magnitude of 3. Thus, we have 3 spatial dimensions: x, y, and z. If it’s action we’re different, we couldn’t even conceive of such a world, let alone claim it fit for life

Another is Lambda (the cosmological constant) at an extreme magnitude of 10^-122

That’s a decimal followed by 122 zeros, and if it were slightly different, the universe would have either expanded too fast for galaxies to form or so slow that it would fall back in on itself

Epsilon (nuclear efficiency of helium fusion) is 0.007. If it were 0.006, only hydrogen would exist, and if 0.008, hydrogen couldn’t exist. Either of these alternatives would make life, with its complex chemistry, impossible

Then we have N, Omega, Q, Planck, the coupling constant, and 15 other constants for the particles in the standard model. And still, there are ~70 other known constants. All calibrated, all with specific actions

The question nowadays, however, isn’t if the universe is fine-tuned or not. Theists AND atheists alike agree on the fine-tuned nature of the universe. Most atheists who disagree simply aren’t up to date with their own arguments

 

So the real question is: what fine-tuned the universe? There are essentially 2 options: God, or the multiverse

The correct answer would have to be one that has explanatory power for both the universe and for itself

Let’s analyze the multiverse. It’s a theoretical realm that contains an infinite number of universes, each with different constants. So, with an infinite amount of universes, it’s argued there has to exist some that are fit for life, and we’re in one of those

If we weren’t, we couldn’t ask the question of why it’s fine-tuned in the first place (the anthropic principle)

There are many issues with this. Firstly, is that, although the theoretical multiverse has explanatory power for the universe, it doesn’t have explanatory power for itself. It’s an unconscious, eternal sea of random bubbling universes, yet has no explanation of why it is that way

It can be asked, what determined how the multiverse works? Why does it have its own rules/laws (of generating universes) rather than simply doing nothing? Since it’s not a conscious, intelligent agent, it has no will, and thus no explanatory power for why it is the way that it is. From an ontological perspective, it’s impossible for it to be the fundamental source of reality since it’s unable to explain its own existence

Another problem is that atheists only argue that it contains universes of different magnitudes for the fundamental laws, without even noting that the actions of those laws are even more imperative

They’d have to claim the actions were selected out of an infinite number of potential actions. This is illogical due to absurdity

Thirdly, is that the multiverse’s only apparent reason to exist is to serve as a cop out argument to the more intuitive answer for fine-tuning: intelligence

It’s a brute force “solution” to the obvious one. If someone logs into their twitter account, by default you’d assume they put in the right password, not that they tried every possible password and then logged in. This is analogous to the multiverse argument. At best, it’s a funny attempt to avoid one of God’s most direct signs God, on the other hand, has explanatory power for the universe and for Himself. God is non-contingent, singular, and has a will. Thus, God is an ontologically sound be-all-end-all source of existence.

Atheists often claim that there’s no evidence of a Creator, yet when they encounter such evidence, they argue an idea that has no evidence: a faith-based multiverse. They shouldn’t make “scientific” theories based on a need to avoid God.

The purpose of this world is to test who of us will believe in God and who won’t when given the option to do either. But God doesn’t leave us to blind faith; He shows us signs, proofs, reasoning to find Him

Fine-tuning is one of those direct signs, a message from God to us. However, it’s already been taught to us that a person who wants God will be increased in faith by these signs, and a person who doesn’t, will be increased in misguidance by these same signs. This is because they’ve now rejected yet another chance from God, and are now another tick further into ruin. And one day through time, the final tick will pass by and the reality will set upon such a person

And on Judgement Day God will ask, ‘did there not come to you My signs?’

And their response will be ‘Yes, but we rejected.’

Don’t make that your reality. To the believers, increase in faith. And to the others, ponder deeply and realize God may be addressing you right now. The fine-tuned universe is a sign. Take it for what it is, without the mental gymnastics needed to reject it.
